Zeven jaar na het geweldige album "Reasons" komt Songs Of The Exile (S.O.T.E.) met een zeer ambitieus project in de vorm van een rockopera. Een spontaan idee van zanger en gitarist Gerton Leijdekker, dat eigenlijk al ontstond enkele maanden na het verschijnen van "Reasons". En die periode van bijna zeven jaar heeft de band ook daadwerkelijk gebruikt om "Chosen" te creëren, uit te werken en te perfectioneren. Was de band in 2008 al uit de kinderschoenen, anno 2015 maakt men de ultieme stap naar volwassenheid.

Het concept van "Chosen" is boeiend en steekt goed in elkaar: wat tussen drie vrienden 'Prophet' (Gerton Leijdekker), 'Tech' (Peter H. Boer) en 'Manipulator' (Bas IJff) begint als oprechte zorg voor vervuiling en overbevolking van de aarde, ontwikkelt zich al snel tot perverse oplossingen, corruptie en individuele honger naar macht. Uiteraard gaat dit gepaard met slachtoffers, waarbij Mark Smit (Knight Area) in zijn rol als 'Hand Of God' het meest gevoelig en kwetsbaar blijkt voor de giftige woorden van 'Manipulator'. 'Hand Of God's partner', vertolkt door Sabine van der Loos (Ledz Go Purple) probeert haar partner op zeer overtuigende wijze (wat een heerlijke stem!) op andere gedachten te brengen en zijn wanhoopsdaad te verijdelen. Van meet af aan ontstaat hierdoor een huiveringwekkend hoorspel met fatale afloop...

Als je een rockopera brengt en je indrukwekkende voorgangers als Ayreon en Xystus kent, dan wil je natuurlijk niet in je hemd staan. En dus heeft men voor "Chosen" gebruik gemaakt van een orkest en koor van vlees en bloed. En dat hoor je, want de productie van "Chosen" (in handen van Peter H. Boer) is werkelijk oorstrelend. Waar de drums op "Reasons" wat ver achterin de mix stonden, heeft Menno de Vries een behoorlijk centrale en dominante plek gekregen. Sowieso klinkt "Chosen" prettig 'zwaar' (dat krijg je als je een bassist in hart en nieren achter de knoppen zet) en dat komt de uitvoering zeer ten goede.

De luisteraar wordt overigens niet direct hard in het gezicht geslagen met overdreven bombast. Openers Lucid Dreams en Heed The Call (luister naar die heerlijke toetsen!) zijn lekker pakkende progrock songs die aardig in het verlengde liggen van het album "Reasons". De kracht van het koor en orkest worden pas optimaal benut vanaf The One. Dan krijgt het concept meer vorm en weet men een ongelooflijk sterke spanningsboog te creëren. Strijkers en blazers bezorgen je echt kippenvel en als dan halverwege de orkaan uitbarst, krachtig ondersteund door de grunts van 'Tech' (Peter H. Boer) val je als rechtgeaarde liefhebber van progrock onvermijdelijk in katzwijm.

De dynamische opbouw is trouwens ook een groot compliment waard, want met songs als Sacrificial Lamb bouwt men wat lucht en ruimte in, waardoor je als luisteraar geen moment vermoeid raakt. Zodoende schuif je weer naar de punt van je stoel voor Lament - Double Standards. Wat je hier hoort is eigenlijk met geen toets te beschrijven; passie, drama, agressie, wanhoop, het blaast je echt van de sokken. Alle karakters beleven hier een vocaal hoogtepunt en dit is hoorbaar het omslagpunt in dit boeiende verhaal. Orkest en koor excelleren hier, dit moet je echt horen, magistraal...

We hebben zo door de maanden/jaren heen al aardig wat toppers van eigen bodem mogen beluisteren. Denk daarbij uiteraard aan de mooie laatste Ulysses en iets verder terug Knight Area. Wat mij betreft gaat Songs Of The Exile er zo aan het eind van 2015 nog even dunnetjes overheen. Nederland draait zo hoog mee in de eredivisie van ons genre en dat vervult met oprechte trots. Met heel veel energie en middelen worden de juweeltjes hier aaneen geregen en dat mag best nog eens onderstreept worden. En ja, dat S.O.T.E. bij mij met "Chosen" definitief een bijzonder plekje heeft afgedwongen, mag duidelijk zijn.

Seven years after the amazing album "Reasons" Songs Of The Exiles (S.O.T.E.) the return with a very ambitious project in the form of a rockopera. A spontaneous idea from singer and guitarplayer Gerton Leijdekker, that actualy formed already a few months after the release of "Reasons". This period of seven years is indeed fully utilised by the band to create, develop and perfectionate "Chosen". If the band was already out of infancy in 2008, in 2015 they're taking the ultimate step to adulthood.

Chosen's concept is fascinating and well put together; What starts out as a sincere concern for the pollution and overpopulation between three friends 'Prophet' (Gerton Leijdekker), 'Tech' (Peter H. Boer) and 'Manipulator' (Bas Ijff), soon developes to perverted solutions, corruption and individual power hunger. Of course this takes casualties, where Mark Smit (Knight Area) in his role as 'Hand Of God' proofs to be most sensitive and vulnerable to Manipulators poisoned words. 'Hand Of God's Partner', played by Sabine van der Loos (Ledz Go Purple), convincingly tries to change her partner's mind (what a delicious voice) and to prevent his desparate act. From the start on a terrifying audio play forms with a fatal ending...

If you're bringing a rockopera, and you know the impressive predecessors like Ayreon and Xystus, you do not want to end up empty handed. So for "Chosen" an orchestra and choir of flesh and blood was used. And you can hear it, because the production of "Chosen" (in the hands of Peter H. Boer) is truly delightful to your ears. Where the drums were somewhat in the back of the mix on "Reasons", has Menno de Vries now received a pretty central and dominant place. "Chosen" sounds pleasingly heavy (that's what you get when a thoroughbred bassist is behind the consol) which highly benefits the performance.

The listener is not hit straight in the face with excessive bombastics. Openers Lucid Dream and Heed The Call (just listen to thosse sweet keyboards) are nice catchy progrock songs that fit nicely in the vein of "Reasons". The power of the choir and orchestra is only used to it's full potential from The One. Only then the concept gains it's form and do they create and immensely strong tension curve. Strings, Brass and woodwinds really give you goosebumps, and when halfway through the tornado hits, powerfull supported by the grunts of 'Tech' (Peter H. Boer) you will, as a true lover of progrock, nearly faint.

By the way, the dynamic build up is worth a big compliment, because with songs like Sacrificial Lamb some air and space is build in, as a result the listener never gets tired. So that you may slide to the tip of your chair for Lament - Double standards. What's been brought to you here can hardly be described; passion, drama, aggression, desparation, it really knocks you of your feet. All characters experience a vocal climax and it's a clearly tangible turning point in this fascinating story. Orchestra and Choir excell, you really must hear this, majestic...

Through the months/years we've been able to listen to plenty of top acts from our own country. Thenk, of course, of the beautiful latest album of Ulysses eand, somewhat further back, Knight Area. As far as I'm concerned, S.O.T.E. outranks this just at the end of 2015. The Netherlands hereby plays high in the premier league of our genre, and this truly fills me with pride. The little gems stringed together with lots of energy and means, and this may well be emphasized again. And yes, that S.O.T.E. has permanently won a special place with me with "Chosen", may be obvious.

Reasons, the last achievement of Dutch band Songs Of The Exile dates back all the way to 2008. The band with frontman Gerton Leijdekker is now back with Chosen, a true rockopera.

It is a very ambitious project with supporting symphony orchestra and a choir. The style iof previous albums however is still recognisable , and the angular guitar of Leijdekker still plays a major role in the music, just like his characteristic voice that is not for everyone. There are, by the way, more guest vocalists, amongst which Mark Smit (Knight Area).

The orchestral pieces are very cinematic and often dark in nature and certainly suspenseful. The music is not easy to follow and demands a considerable effort from the listener, because the melodies are not always simple to the ear.

That S.O.T.E. knows how to play is clear, because also the rhythmsection, consisting of Peter Boer (bass) and Menno de Vries (drums), weaves a complicated rhythmic carpet. By the way, de Vries has recently been replaced by Mark van der Werf.

The album contains both short and long songs, and the concept deals with the dream of a man in a pub with a positive idea about the overpopulation of the world, that turns into a nightmare of power and manipulation.

Chosen is divers, because it goes from calmly orchestral to solid rock with growling vocals and distorted voices.Rush is named as the big �, and influences from that band are certainly there. However, where the Canadian masters almost always succeed to impress, is the quality of S.O.T.E.'s music sometimes inconsistent. All in all a daring and impressive album that will certainly please the adventurous listener.

Reasons, het laatste wapenfeit van de Nederlandse band Songs Of The Exile stamtalweer uit 2008. De band met voorman Gerton Leijdekker kom nu terug met Chosen, een heuse rockopera.

Het is een zeer ambitieus project met ondersteuning van een symfonieorkest en een koor. De stijl van de vorige albums is echter nog steeds herkenbaar en het hoekige gitaarspel van Leijdekker blijft een duidelijk stempel drukken op de muziek, evenals zijn zeer karakteristieke stem die niet voor iedereen even prettig zal klinken. Er zijn overigens meerdere gastzangers te horen, onder wie Mark Smit (Knight Area).

De orkestrale stukken doen zeer filmisch aan en zijn vaak donker van aard en absoluut spannend. De muziek is niet eenvoudig te volgen en vraagt een behoorlijke inspanning van de luisteraar, omdat de melodieën niet altijd gemakkelijk in het gehoor liggen.

Dat S.O.T.E. kan spelen is duidelijk, want ook de ritmesectie, bestaande uit Peter Boer (bas) en Menno de Vries (drums), legt een gecompliceerd ritmisch tapijt neer. De Vries is overigens recent vervangen door Mark van der Werf.

Het album bevat zowel korte als lange songs en het concepthandelt over de droom van een man in een kroeg die van een positief idee over de overbevolking van de aarde, verandert in een nachtmerrie over macht en manipulatie.

Chosen is afwisselend, want het gaat van rustig orkestraal naar stevige rock met grommende zang en vervormde stemmen.

Als grote voorbeeld noemt de band Rush en van die band zijn zeker wat invloeden te bespeuren. Echter, waar de Canadese grootmeesters er nagenoeg altijd in slagen te imponeren wil de muziek bij S.O.T.E. nog wel eens te wisselvallig van kwaliteit zijn.

Al met al een gewaagd en indrukwekkend album waarmee de avontuurlijk ingestelde luisteraar zich zeker zal vermaken. Op 30 oktober is de cd-presentatie in het Partheater in Aplhen aan den Rijn, georganiseerd door Serious Music Alphen.
